Italy has topped the list of destinations where British motorists are most at risk of needing to claim on their insurance.
The research by insurance4carhire.com, found that the most frequent cause for claims while on the road is accidental damage, closely followed by vandalism, theft and mis-fuelling, but also for more unusual events such as damage by hailstones, volcanic ash and even striking a wild animal.
The average claim for 2014 was £350, according to the firm.
Lauren Mason, from I4CH, said: “We know that many people can feel daunted about driving an unfamiliar car, especially abroad, so if you are heading off for a family getaway this February half-term, don’t leave the holiday-admin to the pick-up desk.
“Last minute pressures can often lead to panic purchases that won’t necessarily cover you in every eventuality should the worst happen.”
