ATOM – the UK’s first “truly digital bank” to open next year

9th April 2014

A new digital bank called ATOM is to open next year led by the founder of Metro Bank Anthony Thomson and the CEO of First Direct Mark Mullen. Atom is expected to open for business in 2015.

The team says ATOM will offer an exciting and innovative alternative to the way customers interact with established banks. The bank, which says it will be the first truly digital bank, will have no branches but will aim to go beyond simply ‘online banking’. It will offer personal and business banking.

Thomson will be Atom’s chairman, with Mullen as its chief executive officer. The bank will be headquartered in the North East of England.

Thomson says: “Designed entirely for the digital age and with none of the legacy issues of the past, Atom will be the UK’s first real alternative to the established banks. Atom will be led and governed by an experienced and imaginative team who have a passion for people and know what it takes to put the customer at the heart of an organization. Together we will offer our personal and business customers both better customer service and better value. We believe that Atom will be the 21st century choice for customers who want a bank that’s not just different, but more importantly, better.”
